Thermodynamics

Thermodynamics (PLAS. 2470)

Since 2020 Spring semester, several changes are made:

  • In one of the weekly lectures (usually on Friday), I work with students to resolve a worksheet in class. During the lecture every Friday, I will demonstrate how to solve the problems (usually 3-4) listed on the worksheet and encourage students to discuss with peers. Typically, the problems on worksheet are similar to the lecture material or homework.
  • I tried to demonstrate simple experiments in class related to Thermodynamics so that students can more appreciate how to apply what they learn from this class to real-world problems. For example, I demonstrated Sterling Engine in class to explain the mass/energy balance and engine cycle. I also brought a drinking bird to explain how the ideal gas law works.  We also learn how to design an energy-efficient house by checking the MassSave program available in Massachusetts.
  • I implemented an extra project for students to make up their grades.
