Course Overview:

A critical issue for entrepreneurs and managers is how to translate opportunity into competitive advantage.  This course examines theories of innovation and their application to real-world business opportunities. A particular focus is placed on emerging scientific and technical innovations and the opportunities and challenges they present to both existing businesses and new venture entrepreneurs. Students examine innovation strategies, planning models, evaluation models, licensing and the commercialization process required to launch new businesses around innovative products and technologies.

 

Course Objectives:

At the conclusion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Articulate the importance of Innovation and Technology Management to individual businesses and our economy;
  • Apply a conceptual framework for assessing the innovation and technological capabilities of a business organization;
  • Discuss specific applications of Innovation and Technology Management as a competitive business strategy;
  • Discuss successful and unsuccessful examples of how companies have responded to innovation and technological change;
  • Articulate the business potential for a specific emerging field of scientific or technological research;
  • Recommend business development strategies for a specific field of scientific or technological research.
