WHAT YOU TRIED:      We implemented a self service model for faculty to design, create and maintain professional looking websites utilizing the power of the CampusPress (WordPress) framework and combining it with the easy to use, drag and drop functionality of the Elementor plugin. We also partnered with Web Services to develop a custom UMass Lowell template for these sites to help address uniformity within the UML domain and the ongoing challenges of accessibility.

WHAT YOU WISH YOU WOULD HAVE KNOWN:     We would have benefited more from knowing how these sites were going to be used and what types of options to preload into the Elementor plugin.

ASSESSMENT (OR IMPACT):       Making this technology available to faculty has been extremely successful on campus in that it allows faculty to create and maintain rich websites with a multitude of different content options (images, videos, PDF, Etc.) with minimal training, resulting in freeing up valuable faculty time.

ARTICLE TITLE: Engaging Students with Polling

SUBMITTED BY (NAME & TITLE): Donna Mellen, Associate Director of Academic Technology

EMAIL ADDRESS: Donna_Mellen@uml.edu

WHAT YOU TRIED: TEST: I used PollEv with my Statistics students to make the class more engaging. I wasn't interested in making sure the student responses were correct, this was purely used to gauge understanding of the topic. My class size has increased from 60 to 80 and I was looking for a method to reach students sitting at the back of the room. I used PollEv at least once weekly for 6-7 weeks. During our last poll, I requested feedback from students. 72% enjoyed using polling, 22% didn't like using polling, and 6% were indifferent.

WHAT YOU WISH YOU WOULD HAVE KNOWN: Many students do not have working devices; smart phones, laptops, iPads, etc.

ASSESSMENT (OR IMPACT): No impact, this was a test.
