OVERVIEW

Dr. Hajduk has over 20 years of experience in the field of geotechnical engineering and is currently a registered Professional Engineer (PE) in South Carolina.  Dr. Hajduk was previously registered as a PE in North Carolina, Georgia, Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey.  In addition, he holds a Masters Level certification in high strain dynamic pile testing from Foundations QA. His past projects include the Charleston International Airport Terminal Parking Garage, the College of Charleston Addlestone Library, the Woodrow Wilson Bridge outside of Washington, DC, the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge in Charleston County, SC, and the US-44 Extension in Carver, Mass.  Prior to joining the faculty of UMass Lowell, Dr. Hajduk was a Senior Engineer for Terracon Consultants, Inc. and an Assistant Professor at The Citadel.

Dr. Hajduk has recieved numerous awards during his carrer.  In 2015 Dr. Hajduk won the Citizen Engineer award from the Boston Society of Civil Engineers Section (BSCES) of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE).  He was awarded the 2012-2013 Donald G. Leith Award and the 2012-2013 Student Government Association (SGA) Exceeding Excellence Teacher Award for the College of Engineering.  The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Student Chapter selected Dr. Hajduk as the 2013 and 2014 Faculty Advisor of the Year for Region 1.  Dr. Hajduk was also inducted into the Hall of Achievement for his high school alma mater (Assabet Valley Regional Technical High School) in April 2013.  Previsouly, Dr. Hajduk was the 2009 Charleston Engineers Joint Council (CEJC) Engineer of the Year; was acknowledged as one of the Top 40 Under 40 in 2005 by the Charleston Regional Business Journal; and was awarded the 2005 Technical Merit Award by the American Society of Civil Engineers South Carolina Section (ASCE-SC).   Two of Dr. Hajduk’s projects have received regional and national awards. The Old Charleston High School renovation into the Medical University of South Carolina’s (MUSC) College of Health Professions was awarded the 2004 Project of the Year by the Pile Driving Contractors Association and was a 2005 American Council of Engineering Companies of South Carolina (ACEC-SC) Engineering Excellence Award Winner.  For this project, Dr. Hajduk developed the driven pile installation testing and inspection program, to include pre-construction surveys of adjacent structures, monitoring of ground vibrations, adjacent structures, and the free-standing brick masonry facade of old Charleston High School incorporated into new building during pile installation. The Morris Island Lighthouse Foundation Stabilization Phase I project received the 2008 Pile Driving Contractors Association (PDCA) Project of the Year Award and 2009 American Council of Engineering Companies South Carolina (ACEC-SC) Palmetto Award for Engineering Excellence. For this project, Dr. Hajduk designed the vibration control plan to monitor the historic lighthouse during installation of sheet pile cofferdam and surrounding rip-rap.  More information on this project and the restoration of the Morris Island Lighthouse is provided on the website of Save The Light, Inc., a grassroot organization dedicated to the preservation and restoration of the Morris Island Lighthouse.

Dr. Hajduk is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineering (ASCE), the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE), the International Society of Micropiles (ISM), and the United States Universities Council on Geotechnical Education and Research (USUCGER).  Dr. Hajduk has numerous technical publications in the fields of civil engineering and engineering education.

EXPERTISE/ACTIVITIES

Geotechnical Engineer. Specialized focus related to the design, construction, and inspection of deep foundations; evaluation of soil engineering properties from in-situ testing; construction vibrations; and the development, use and analysis of geotechnical and structural instrumentation.

Academic interests focus on geotechnical, materials, and mechanics of materials engineering coursework overlaid with improving student’s cognitive development and critical thinking skills and the use of student response devices (i.e. “clickers”) in engineering education.
